At SarniaCrafts, we use two premium printing technologies to bring your designs to life. Use this guide to understand what each method is and how to choose the right one for your next custom project.

Our Printing Methods:

DTF vs. Sublimation

DTF (Direct-to-Film) What it is: DTF involves printing your custom design onto a special clear film, coating it with a heat-activated adhesive powder, and pressing it onto the garment. The ink sits cleanly on top of the fabric. How and When to Use It:

• Best fabric choices: Perfect for 100% cotton, heavy hoodies, blends, canvas bags, and workwear.

• Color flexibility: Ideal for dark or black fabrics because it uses a solid white ink backing that makes colors pop.

• Design type: Best for sharp logos, bold text, and intricate, multi-colored artwork that needs crisp edges.

• Care instruction: Wash garments inside out on a cool setting and avoid ironing directly over the print.

Sublimation Printing What it is: Sublimation uses heat and pressure to turn specialized ink into a gas, which instantly bonds with the fibers of the item. Instead of sitting on top, the ink permanently embeds into the material.

How and When to Use It:

• Best fabric choices: Must be used on 100% polyester, high-polyester blends, or light-colored garments.

• Hard surfaces: Perfect for ceramic mugs, coasters, water bottles, and puzzles that have a polyester coating.

• Design type: Best for full-color photos, seamless edge-to-edge patterns, and vintage gradients. It cannot print white ink, so white areas in a design will show as the background color of the item.

• The “Zero-Feel” benefit: Use this when you want a completely flat, weightless finish. It will never crack, peel, or scratch off—even in the dishwasher or microwave.

Quick Comparison Guide Use this quick checklist to decide which printing method fits your project: Feature DTF (Direct-to-Film) Sublimation Best Fabric Cotton, Hoodies, Canvas, Dark Materials Polyester, Sports Kits, Light Materials Hard Goods Not recommended for mugs/bottles Perfect for Mugs, Coasters, and Plates Texture & Feel Smooth, flexible layer you can feel Completely flat, weightless “zero-feel” Durability Long-lasting (do not iron directly) Permanent, fade-proof, and dishwasher safe.
